Gas Central Heating system can be divided into two broad categories, pumped/vented systems and sealed systems.





Pumped or vented Central Heating systems are most popularly used. A pumped/vented Gas Central Heating System includes components known as a feed and expansion tank to allow for the expansion of water as it is heated in the central heating radiators. Your central heating radiators are heated and your water is stored in a hot water tank. The expansion tank has adequate space to accommodate any water expansion that occurs due to heat. The expansion tank is placed at highest spot to help create water pressure. It heats the house and doubles as the water supply.





For many years now, pumped/vented systems have been the norm for Gas Central Heating.





A slightly newer gas boiler is sealed heating system and this is the preferred heating system in newer properties. No water tanks are needed for a Sealed system as it is a completely closed setup saving space. There are no tanks or pipework in the attic, the whole system is sealed, its unvented, which has its benefits:.





- No risk of freezing pipes in the attic.





- There won't be any repair work on the tank or pipes which will be in the attic for a pumped/vented system.





- The danger of a leaking water tank is all together absent.





- The air cannot enter the system as its sealed and hence there are lesser risks of sludge, corrosion and airlocks developing.





- It is possible to flush out the system if required by using the mains water supply.





A sealed Central Heating System is a packaged unit with all the necessary controls and safety devices. No tank feeds a sealed system, the supply comes directly from the mains. It is plumbed straight into the main water supply.





Normal variations of pressure can be allowed in a sealed system through a pressure vessel that contains compressed gas; this is separated from the sealed system water by a diaphragm. If the pressure becomes too high in a sealed Central Heating System; a safety valve will allow water to escape from the system and if the pressure drops too low a valve will open to refill the system with water.





As compared to other heating systems, Gas Central Heating systems are cheaper to run. Moreover, they offer all kinds of control, which are usually not found in other heating systems giving you a more pleasant environment.
